DESCRIPTION:Libbey House Foundation presents: \nFlorence Scott Libbey Chamber Series \n \n\nJoin us for a casual setting of local musicians with classical music and discussion on Thursday\, October 17\, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. during this casual evening of wonderful fellowship and fun.  Includes light refreshments. \nProgram\nThe artists will be discussing and playing Death and the Maiden by Franz Shubert. The String Quartet No. 14 in D minor\, known as Death and the Maiden\, has been called “one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire”. \nIt was composed in 1824\, after the composer suffered from a serious illness and realized that he was dying. It is named for the theme of the second movement\, which Schubert took from a song he wrote in 1817 of the same title. But writes Walter Willson Cobbett\, all four movements of the quartet are welded “into a unity under the pressure of a dominating idea – the dance of death.” \nThe quartet was first played in 1826 in a private home\, and was not published until 1831\, three years after Schubert’s death. \nReservations are required; Space is limited so purchase your tickets soon to reserve your place. The cost is $30 \nMeet the Artists!\n   Ericsson Hatfield is a composer\, violinist\, and educator. His compositions integrate classical and modern techniques to create a fresh musical language. As a composer\, he received first prize in the 2018 Tribeca New Music Festival for his violin quartet Constellations. He remains as an active teacher and performer and is the Co-Founder of Insight Chamber Players in San Francisco. \n  \n  Elizabeth (Ellie) Lee began her cello studies with Metta Watts and Thomas Kraines when she was ten years old in Philadelphia. From winning competitions to performing with orchestras\, she has appeared in well-known venues including the Marian Anderson Hall (Verizon Hall) at the Kimmel Center\, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall\, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts\, and the Seoul Arts Performing Center. As an orchestral musician\, Ellie joined the Fort Wayne Philharmonic as a full-time cello section member in 2019. \n  \n   Colombian-American violist Javier Otalora is an enthusiastic orchestral\, chamber\, and contemporary music player. He has performed with the Cincinnati\, Detroit\, Dallas\, and St. Louis Symphony Orchestras. He was also a member of the Aspen Conducting Orchestra and the International Contemporary Ensemble. Otalora has spent summers at the Aspen Music Festival\, Meadowmount School\, Red Rocks Music Festival\, the Dali Quartet International Music Festival\, and Spoleto Festival (USA). He now spends his summer as a member of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra (NY). \n  \n Mwakudua (Dua) WaNgure is a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra violin section. He started playing violin at a young age through the Suzuki method in his hometown of Fort Myers\, Florida. Dua completed his studies at various music schools in the Midwest including the Interlochen Arts institute\, Oberlin Conservatory\, the University of Michigan and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory. \n  \nThe Libbey House offers accessible parking in the lot behind the house off Woodruff\, adjacent to an accessible ramp. \nYour reservation will be documented and there is no “ticket” sent to you. DESCRIPTION:Libbey House Announces Spring Lecture Series: Focus on the “Libbey Legacy of Education”\nIn celebration of the 100th anniversary of Libbey High School and the 150th anniversary of the founding of the University of Toledo\, the Libbey House Foundation will host lectures on the two institutions and their connections to the Libbey family. \nAn Institution for the Promoting of Knowledge:  The University of Toledo at 150\nLecture by Barbara Floyd\, former university archivist at the University of Toledo and author of the recent book An Institution for the Promoting of Knowledge:  The University of Toledo at 150\, will discuss the founding of UT in 1872 by Jesup W. Scott\, grandfather of Libbey’s wife\, Florence Scott Libbey\, on Thursday\, April 27\, at 7 p.m.  The talk will examine Scott’s vision of Toledo as the “Future Great City of the World\,” and how that vision led him to establish the Toledo University of Arts and Trades\, which became UT.  While Scott’s university failed in its early years\, the tenacity of his three sons (including Florence’s father Maurice Scott) to see their father’s vision survive eventually produced an institution of higher learning that celebrated its 150th anniversary last year. \nCopies of Floyd’s book will be available for sale at a book signing and reception prior to the lecture beginning at 6:30 p.m. \nSpace is limited to the first 50 people. DESCRIPTION:Libbey House Announces Fall Lecture Series:  100 Years of Disability History in Our Community\nA Lecture Series in Honor of Tim Harrington\, Executive Director\, Ability Center of Toledo \nThe lecture series will honor the legacy of the Ability Center of Toledo\, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020\, and the work of its long-time executive director\, Tim Harrington.  Harrington has announced that he will be retiring by the end of 2021. \nThe Toledo State Hospital: A History\nLecture by Kim Brownlee\, author of the recent book The Toledo State Hospital.  This lecture will examine the fascinating history of Toledo’s institution that helped those with mental illness.  Brownlee’s lecture is based on her new book\, which was recently published by Arcadia Publishing in 2020.  The Toledo State Hospital served as a residential treatment facility for the mentally ill from 1888 until the early 1980s.  When it opened\, the hospital was revolutionary as the first asylum in the country built using the “cottage model.”  Rather than one large facility\, the Toledo State Hospital consisted of smaller buildings designed to look like homes.  Staff relied on “moral treatment” methods\, a philosophy that believed calming surrounding and nutritious food\, productive work\, and diversion would help to cure.  At one time\, the Toledo State Hospital housed more than 3000 residents. In the 1950s\, the population began to decline\, and as the buildings of the Toledo State Hospital emptied\, they were demolished\, and all were gone by 1981.
