SUMMARY:LIBBEY SALON FALL LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:Libbey House Foundation to Host Talk on History of Toledo State Hospital \nThe Libbey House Foundation will host a talk by Toledo author Kimberly Brownlee on the history of the Toledo State Hospital on Thursday\, October 22.  It begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m.\, followed by an illustrated lecture at 7 p.m. in the parlor of the Libbey House\, 2008 Scottwood. \nBrownlee’s lecture is based on her new book\, which will be published by Arcadia Publishing in October.  The Toledo State Hospital served as a residential treatment facility for the mentally ill from 1888 until the early 1980s.  When it opened\, the hospital was revolutionary as the first asylum in the country built using the “cottage model.”  Rather than one large facility\, the Toledo State Hospital consisted of smaller buildings designed to look like homes.  Staff relied on “moral treatment” methods\, a philosophy that believed calming surrounding and nutritious food\, productive work\, and diversion would help to cure.  At one time\, the Toledo State Hospital housed more than 3000 residents. In the 1950s\, the population began to decline\, and as the buildings of the Toledo State Hospital emptied\, they were demolished\, and all were gone by 1981. \n\nSocial distancing and mask wearing (except when eating and drinking) will be observed and and sanitizer will be available. \nDue to social distancing\, tickets are limited to the first 25 registrants.  The cost is $10\, and can be purchased through the Libbey House website: www.libbeyhouse.org  The Libbey House offers accessible parking in the lot behind the house off Woodruff\, adjacent to an accessible ramp.  Copies of Brownlee’s book will be available for sale following her talk.

SUMMARY:STUDIO GLASS MOVEMENT SYMPOSIUM
DESCRIPTION:STUDIO GLASS MOVEMENT SYMPOSIUM \n \n\nThe American Studio Glass Movement: Toledo’s Creative Legacy\nThis day-long symposium on Saturday\, November 2\, will provide a unique opportunity to learn about the role Toledo played in the creation of the American Studio Glass Movement and the continuing legacy of that movement in the city. Centered on the recent master’s thesis by Bowling Green State University graduate Kaysie Harrington titled “The American Studio Glass Movement: A Regional Study of Its Birth in Northwest Ohio” (December 2018)\, the symposium will include comments by scholars of the history of Toledo glass and the studio glass movement as well as by contemporary artists of the studio glass movement and collectors of their works. The event is co-sponsored by the Libbey House Foundation\, the BGSU College of Arts and Sciences and its Department of History\, and the BGSU School for the Arts. \nMorning sessions will focus on the history of the studio glass movement\, including the history of industrial glass production in Toledo that influenced the creation of the studio glass movement. The afternoon program will focus on the legacy of the studio glass movement\, both in Toledo and nationally. \nAfternoon sessions will feature moderated panel discussions by studio glass artists and early collectors. The symposium will conclude with audience discussion led by Marc Folks\, executive director of the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo\, on how the city can continue to build on the legacy of the movement to spur creativity and economic development throughout the city. \nSpeakers include: Barbara Floyd\, author of The Glass City: Toledo and the Industry That Built It; Kaysie Harrington; Diane Wright\, curator of glass at the Toledo Museum of Art; glass artists Jack Schmidt\, Baker O’Brien\, Shawn Messenger\, and Adam Goldberg; and glass collectors Milt Hakel\, Gail Zimmerman\, and Jim Moore. \nThe cost of the day-long symposium\, including morning refreshments\, lunch\, and a wine-and-cheese reception\, is $50\, or $40 for students with valid school ID. Due to facility size\, registration is limited to the first 50 persons. All proceeds benefit the Libbey House Foundation in its efforts to preserve the home of Edward Drummond Libbey\, the founder of the glass industry in Toledo. \n Register early to reserve your space.
